The Communication Department has become fully accredited by the Accrediting Council on Education in Journalism and Mass Communications. The action was by unanimous vote at the annual ACEJMC meeting in Washington D.C. It came after a preliminary provisional accreditation that the department has held since 2008.
This makes Buffalo State the only public institution in New York State to be accredited in professional education for majors in Journalism, Media Production (formerly Broadcasting), and Public Communication (public relations and advertising). It places the college among the 15 percent of American colleges and universities offering communication degrees that are accredited by ACEJMC.
"Accreditation proves a significant 'value added' for our graduates — past, present and future," said department chair Ron Smith.
"I want to thank everyone associated with this achievement, which has truly been a combined effort. Our faculty and staff — full-time, part-time and retired — have been key to providing the level of education, individual scholarship and professional commitment that is integral to accreditation. The continuing hard work and success of our students and alumni combine as another key element, as is the consistent support of the college administration past and present. And the positive relationship we have with Western New York communication professionals and media practitioners provides a further foundation for this accreditation milestone."
