Newspapers and Baseball

   Associate Professor Joe Marren presented a paper to journalism historians on "Sol White: An Appreciation."
   White was a player on African American baseball teams in the 19th century. He wrote the first history of African Americans in baseball in a segregated century. Joe is an expert on segregated baseball and the media's role in desegregating the sport.
   The presentation was at the Symposium on the 19th Century Press, the Civil War, and Free Expression, held at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga.
