The department's American Indian Policy and Media Initiative hosted a presentation on "Treaties, Sovereignty and Taxation" at the Burchfield Penney Art Center Nov 21.
Department chair Ron Smith, who directs the initiative, moderated the panel and audience Q&A as part of Native Heritage Month activities.
Wayne Porter, Mohawk (turtle clan), gave background information on treaties between the Haudenoshaunee (Iroquois) and the English, French and Dutch governments, later becoming the first nations to recognize the newly proclaimed United States government.
Dr. Lloyd Elm, Onondaga (eel clan), professor of education at Buffalo State, discussed sovereignty. He noted that the U.S. federal government has affirmed the sovereignty of the various Indian nations in New York State.
Christina Schindler, Seneca (wolf clan), who works with the Seneca Free Trade Association, discussed efforts by New York State to tax good sold on Native lands and federal attempts to regulate commerce between the Seneca and other New York State citizens.
