Louis Massiah, filmmaker and founder of Scribe Video Center in Philadelphia, will speak at Buffalo State at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, November 19, 2019 in the Donald Savage Hall TV studio, Savage 103. Massiah will discuss We Tell: 50 Years of Participatory Community Media, a national traveling exhibition focused on place-based documentaries made in collaboration with communities and subjects who engage in their own representation. Massiah curated We Tell with Patricia Zimmerman of Ithaca College.

Communication Professor Dorothea Braemer will host Massiah's talk in her Media Management course, and Massiah will show two episodes from the We Tell Series, Turf and Wages of Work, on Thursday at 6:30 (Turf Program) and 8:30 (Wages of Work Program) at Hallwalls Contemporary Art Center, 341 Delaware Avenue. Event details here: https://www.hallwalls.org/media-arts/6165.html
The works featured in We Tell are organized into 6 thematic programs, and each explores issues that have emerged across 50 years of participatory community media. We Tell features a diversity of voices, community groups, and collectives, historical time periods, social and political issues and geographic locations across the United States.

Louis Massiah produced two segments for "Eyes of the Prize II" series and has directed many documentaries, including "Trash" (1985), "The Bombing of Osage Avenue" (1986), and W.E.B. Du Bois - a Biography in Four Voices". He is also the founder and director the Scribe Video Center, where members of community organizations and emerging video makers are trained to address social issues through the creative use of video.

An intent crowd of students, faculty and community members gathered on Thursday, September 5 for the screening of Roll, Red, Roll, the inaugural film in the 6th Annual Beyond Boundaries Screening and Discussion Series, presented at the Burchfield Penney Art Center.

There was a panel after the film featuring Dr. Dori Marshall, UB Dept. of Psychology and representatives from Crisis Service of WNY and Weigel Health Center.

Roll, Red Roll is a true-crime thriller that goes beyond the headlines to uncover the deep-seated and social media-fueled "boys will be boys" culture at the root of high school sexual assault in America.
At a pre-season football party in small-town Steubenville, Ohio, a heinous crime took place: the assault of a teenage girl by members of the beloved high school football team. What transpired would garner national attention and result in the sentencing of two key offenders. But it was the disturbing social media evidence uncovered online by crime blogger Alex Goddard that provoked the most powerful questions about the case and about the collusion of teen bystanders, teachers, parents and coaches to protect the assailants and discredit the victims.

Beyond Boundaries is curated by Communication faculty Dr. Ruth Goldman and Professor Meg Knowles, along with Michael Heflin, of the Office of Equity and Campus Diversity, which sponsors the series in collaboration with the Communication Department and the Burchfield Penney Art Center.
